Tchüss to the city of Glück and hello to the home of Hilde!

So my time in Itzehoe and Glückstadt is coming to a close.....tomorrow actually, and I'm off to a city called Hildesheim.

 

Leaving a place like Glückstadt is really hard! I have made some really good friends here and I have learned so much here, not only about missionary work but also about myself. At least my last week in Glückstadt was a good one. We had the awesome opportunity to do service at the World War Two memorial in Itzehoe. The bad part was that Elder O'Keefe got a gnarly tic in his arm and he is now on Lyme disease watch.

I also got to say goodbye to all of my friend that I have made here and we were able to finish the preparations for a music event that we are putting on in the church. All in all a really good week... other then the tic fiasco.

I'm so excited to move on to a new area and to see what I can learn and who I can help in Hildesheim!

Zone Conference, Goodbyes, and Being Attacked by a Drunk Guy

This week was pretty awesome! It was a week of seeing old friends and companions and saying goodbye to the best mission president a missionary could ever ask for! It was also a week of dreams coming true... (which will be explained)

This week we traveled to Hamburg where half of the mission met to have our last zone conference with President and Sister Kosak. We had the opportunity to hear from them both and hear a couple of awesome musical numbers... A week earlier President Kosak had asked me to do a musical number, and then when I arrived at the conference he asked me to change what song I was singing..... so I sang  "We Thank Thee Oh God For A Prophet" after finishing President Kosak asked me to do it again... but then he sang with me and that was really cool!

As a goodbye present, President Kosak did a sketch of Joseph Smith for us! How cool is that?

and now on to the part about dreams coming true... So when I was in the MTC I had a dream that I got attacked by a drunk guy......

 

This week we talked to a couple on the street and it was going awesome! We asked them if they wanted to see a video and they were more than willing to watch "Because of Him". Everything was going great and we were halfway through the video when out of nowhere this drunk guy walked up to us and tried to steal my IPad!

Elder O`Keefe distracted the drunk guy while I finished up talking to this couple about the video, and when I finished I turned around to see elder O'Keefe being held by the front of his shirt and the drunk guy winding up to punch him in the face!

That is not what I expected so I ran over and helped my companion out of the situation, but not without the drunk guy trying to attack again! Needless to say, we handled it and we are okay!

SO COOL!

This week was honestly just a great week and I learned so much! 

Something that has been on my mind this week is that Heavenly Father loves us!

He doesn't just love some of us. He loves ALL of us! 

He wants us to be the very best WE can be. He doesn't want everyone to be a President Kosak or for everyone to be a Elder O'Keefe. He wants me to be the very best Elder Schmalz I can be and He wants you to be the best YOU! We are all different and those differences are blessings. So yeah, just go be the best you that you can be and don't try to be someone else!

Transfer week, two new companions? and Alli Baghi!

So the first week of the transfer is usually pretty hard considering you have to adjust to a new companion and how he lives and does missionary work, but this one hasn't been super hard. Not the easiest but most definitely not the hardest.

Elder O'Keefe is from Pleasant Grove, Utah and he actually trained one of my best friends in the mission, Elder Winkel! He is super musical and is an amazing piano player so the branch absolutely loves him, which should make things easy.

So this last Friday we had an emergency zone trading meeting which included us picking up another new companion?...... A brand spankin new IPad!

The zone training meeting was fantastic! We went back to the basics and had three classes about the Book of Mormon, church attendance, and the importance of personal prayer.  One of the highlights  was when one of the zone leaders, Elder Blake talked about one of my favorite scriptures, and that is the last half of 1st Nephi 1:20 and it says

 

"But behold, I, Nephi, will show unto you that the tender mercies of

the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their

faith, to make them mighty even unto the power of deliverance."

I actually didn't notice or really see the importance of this scripture until I came on my mission. I may have actually already talked about it one of my emails, but this scripture has followed me around my whole mission and not in the creepy stalker kind of way but more of like a super awesome guardian angel scripture kind of way! When ever it seems that I'm starting to get discouraged or frustrated, every time in some way or another this scripture is always one of the scriptures that always comes up! I want to testify that I know this scripture is true. The tender mercies of the lord are over all that he has chosen! But then the question may come up of "who is it that he has chosen?" or the thoughts that say "I'm not of the chosen", but we learn in the scriptures that he has chosen all of us! He saved all of us, not just some of us! When we understand that, We can see how cool this scripture truly is! If you don't believe me or you are maybe thinking that our Savior has forgotten you, I promise that he hasn't, and if you just take a moment and think about all of the things you have going for you. Heck, even if you honestly and truly count your blessings, you will see that those tender mercies of the lord

have been in your life and will always continue to be in your life. And you will see how much our Savior loves you, because he really does!

So yeah, that's a spiritual nugget that has been on my mind lately.

So onward with the happenings of this last week...

This week Elder O'Keefe and I talked to a man named Alli Baghi. He can't speak German very well and he doesn't understand that much either, but we gave him our card and we went on with the day. Usually when we give someone our card we never hear from them and never see them again but not Alli Baghi!

We walked out of missionary correlation meeting and found Alli sitting in the chapel waiting for church to begin, and he had found himself a Book of Mormon! When he saw us he had the biggest smile on his face, he had a great time at church and with the IPad I was able to communicate

with him in his native language of Persian. He loved our lesson and we immediately made out a time for us to come back today. At church one of the speakers did not come so I had a surprise talk sprung upon me 5 minutes before sacrament meeting, but I gave a talk about my favorite

subject...... missionary work, and Alli loved it! Everything went perfect yesterday!

But.....(don't you just love how there is always a but at the end of all my awesome missionary stories? It's a reoccurring theme of my mission)

We had a great first lesson with Alli today right before we came and started emails. In our lesson we found out more about Alli's background...... Alli is from Iran and does not have a long term Visa. His wife is in prison in Iran for being a Christian and if he returns he will be put to death. He wakes up every day not knowing if he will be deported or if he will be able to save his wife. So yeah, tough situation. In order to try and protect him and his life we may not be able to continue teaching him. We will find out later this week from our mission president. But I'm confident that everything will be straightened out, because he is soooooo ready for the gospel and he is one of the friendliest people I
have ever met!

All in all it was a fantastic week, and we found an awesome new friend! We are utilizing technology, and I know that I have learned a lot this week!

So this week was pretty uneventful, but I did find out that I will be getting a new companion in this coming week.

Due to the uneventfullness (is that a word?) of this last week, this email is going to be pretty short, with a profound quote from one of my good friends here in Germany

"A calm sea never made for a good captain"

I love this quote! It is sooo true! If everything was easy we would never learn and grow and I know that is true. So if you are going through a hard time or a trial there are three things you can always do...

#1 you can choose to face the trail cheerfully and pray and ask for help & comfort.

#2 you can learn and grow from your own experiences and then help others through theirs.

#3 you can email me! Even though I am on the other side of the world I am still just an email and a week away!

Mothers Day and an AWESOME call home!

We are getting iPads!

So a lot has happened in the last two week.

The highlight being that within the next month the Berlin Germany Mission will be one of the European pilot missions for digital missionary work. Because of this announcement all 250 missionaries were asked to make their way to Berlin for a day of training. We had Elder Nielsen and Elder Kearon from the 1st quorum of the seventy come and teach us all about what it takes to be a missionary in the digital age. We also received new manuals and were all asked by President Kosak to take a picture that represented how we are preparing for the iPads. soooooooo Elder Garner and I took this picture:)

Another thing that has been really cool this last week is how long the sun has stayed out! It seriously doesn't set until 8:30 and then since there are literally no mountains here, it stays light until 9:20! And it's not even officially summer yet!

 

 

This week we met with one of our investigators named Azul Mailki. He and his Family fled from Syria to escape religious persecution, because they are Christians. We have been teaching Azul and his family for a while and in our last lesson we asked him if he knew how to pray.... he didn't fully understand the question because he cant speak German very well (Yeah language barriers! It is really hard to teach someone while speaking a language you don't fully understand and then on top of that it is also their 3rd language) so instead of telling us if he knew how to pray he instead recited the Lords Prayer in Aramaic...(the language that Jesus Christ spoke! How cool is that!).

So that was an awesome experience! We taught him how to pray for himself and he loved it, and hopefully we will start seeing some real progress!

This week all in all has been a really hard week, but it has been a week of growth and of learning. I found this really cool quote by President Uchtdorf that has helped me.

Mom questions: What was the BEST part of your week?
"The train ride home from Berlin after out training meeting was absolutely amazing! We rode with Sister Langhurst, Sister Israelsen, Elder Fischer and Elder Hoffman. It was way fun!"

What was one of the times you felt the Spirit this week?
"So at the training meeting we had Elder Kearon and Elder Nielsen from the first quorum of the 70 come to talk to us.

They talked about the parents of the Stripling Warriors and how through their valiant efforts and covenants, they made a generation of amazing young men. Likewise, you and dad have done the same for me, and now it is (almost) time for me to do it for my kids.

I thought that was really cool and the Spirit was so strong and I know that it is true! You have made me the man I am today and everything I will and can accomplish is because of 5 people... Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, The Holy Ghost, and you and Dad.

I know that My Heavenly Father sent me to you because you were the perfect parents for me and I love you!"

 

And that is what made this momma have the feels!

New Game... Where's Gavin?

The entire Germany Berlin Mission with Elders Kearon and Nielson of the Seventy.

Missionary Training as Disciples of Christ in the digital age. Within the next couple of weeks all these missionaries will put their training to use with their new iPads. That's a lot of iPads!

WE GOT THE POWER......

SHUT OFF!
So this week we received a small envelope in the mail that was addressed to Mr. Schmalz and Mr. Garner and honestly it looked like junk mail, so we threw it in the junkmail pile and went out to go and talk to people. After a looooong hard day of getting doors slammed in our faces we decided to call it a night and to start making dinner. The coconut gulash was simmering on the stove top and we were listening to some music when all of the sudden everything went dark...... slowly our eyes adjusted and we went to the power box to see if we had tripped anything, and everything was absolutely perfect. We had noooooo idea why we didn't have power, so we ate dinner by candle light and went to bed, assuming that what ever happened would resolve itself by the next morning.

Well the sun came up and a new day started just like it always does, but one thing was still missing. We still didn't have power! We called the mission office to see if they could help us, but on this fine day, the mission office was actually all taped off for the purpose of repainting, so the office couple informed us that we were on our own and to see if we got anything in the mail that would explain this sudden lack of electricity. We turned to the junk mail pile and we found the small envelope from the city of Itzehoe that pretty much said "we are turning your power off because we lost your money and we want more... First off, what the heck? That is not how paying bills works (I hope)? and secondly, the city office where we needed to pay for said electricity was closed until the next day.  We called the office couple again asking what we should do and they suggested we buy candles, so we did. Did you know with six candles you can boil enough water to cook rice? Neither did we, but it's true, you can!

 

 

Other than that awesome adventure, we had a pretty normal week. Spring has sprung here in Deutschland and it looks absolutely beautiful! The work is going great here in Itzehoe and I'm doing good too!

The new district. Buckets.......of rain. And a creepy demon statue we found in the forest?

This week was the start of a new transfer, and Elder Garner and I are staying together in Itzehoe! Since its a new transfer it means we have a new district.

Yeah, this week was pretty much a normal week of being a missionary. We only had one day that had anything really weird go down and that was Friday.... Friday was one of the nicest days of weather I have experienced in Germany. The sun was out, and it was just perfect to go out and do some basketball finding, so we started off our Friday walking around Itzehoe looking for people playing basketball. After about 30 minutes of walking around we came to the conclusion that there is only one basketball court in all of itzehoe and the gate to said basketball court is locked..... so basketball finding was a bust!  

Moving on from our failed attempt at basketball finding we decided the best course of action to take would be to walk to a small village about 9 kilometers out of town called Münsterdorf and test out our luck there..

That Friday morning as we were packing up to leave the apartment, Elder Garner and I decided that the weather was way too nice to be carrying around a umbrella and that we should instead carry a waterbottle. Little did we know that on our walk to Münsterdorf we would be needing our umbrellas!

Luckily we made it to Münsterdorf without any trouble. No one wanted to talk to us there and we had the choice of either taking the bus back or walking through the Itzehoe forest and try talking to the people enjoying the nice day walking along the paths. We decided that walking through  the forest would be a better use of our time, because of how many people are there. 

We started into the forest when all of the sudden it seriously, in a split second, the nicest day ever turned into buckets of rain! It soaked us through and through, scared away all of our potential investigators, and conveniently destroyed our map!

 

As we were soaking wet, wandering through the forest without a map, we stumbled upon something that really freaked us out! A weird little demon statue that inspired us to blaze our own path out of the forest to the Autobahn to see if anyone would be so kind to give two soaking wet missionaries a ride into town..... no one was so kind! We did get a couple cars that honked at us, but Elder Garner said its probably because we are soaking wet and wearing white dress shirts! ;) 

 

All in all it was a great week! I loved hearing about the Spring Break adventures! 

So as of two days ago I have hit my 7 month mark on my mission! isn't that INSANE? It's a good thing I love being here because that is a long time!

Hurricanes! Easter! General Conference! Making friends with a swan?

So this week there was a Hurricane! (thought I would be safe from those here in Germany, right?) Well apparently not! and because of said hurricane we walked through a lot of hurricane force winds and rain to go to appointments. Luckily we are far enough from the coast that no real damage or danger was present, only bitter cold rain and really strong umbrella destroying winds.

We can assume since our week started off with a hurricane that it wouldn't really get more exciting, right? The fact of the matter is that as a missionary the excitement never really ends, and because after the hurricane we had zone training meeting, which is pretty much like Christmas morning... I was able to stretch the awkward social skills muscles that I don't touch on a daily basis as a missionary! That's pretty exciting! We were able to learn a lot at zone training and see our friends and get to spend a day in the beautiful city of Kiel! (look it up its really cool!)

That wasn't the end of our excitement because we had the awesome opportunity to hide inside as all the nonmember Germans were getting drunk over Easter weekend and then watch them try to dress up nice and go to church on Easter Sunday! But in all seriousness, General Conference was absolutely Fantastic! I loved how they talked about the eternal family and how the gospel blesses families! It's a real motivation to go out and find families and share with them this awesome gospel!

Okay, now the swan story... So when I first arrived here in the city of Glückstadt, in the pond by the church was a swan... or at that point, more of an ugly duckling. He was always alone and whenever we saw him I would quack to him (for those that don't know, I can do a pretty good duck/goose/swan impression) Well as time passed my ugly duckling turned into a swan and whenever he sees me he always comes to the shore and he lets me feed him grass. So this week my companion finally captured a picture of my swan and I just chillin' by the shore of the Glückstadt pond. I know its pretty random, but it really is a tender mercy to know that at least one creature in Glückstadt is always happy when I come!

 

This week has been fantastic! I want to end my weekly update by bearing my testimony that I know with my whole heart that Jesus Christ is my Savior and the Savior of the world! He loves us! He knows us! And it is only through Him that we can live with our families forever! I know that in this day and time he has called a prophet to lead and guide us, and I know that President Thomas S. Monson is that man. I know that our Heavenly Father gave us the Book of Mormon and prayer so that we can receive personal revelation for ourselves and grow closer to Him. I know that this gospel which was restored through Joseph Smith is the one true gospel on this earth and it will help us to become perfect through Him, even as our Heavenly Father and our Savior are perfect! I love being a missionary, it really is the best thing I have ever done, and I cant wait for this next week!

This week we...

did some pretty normal missionary work, which includes walking and talking, teaching and preaching, and a variety of other rhymes that I'm too lazy to come up with at the moment!

But something I did not do this week was take any pictures....... sorry mom! I forgot to grab my camera.......7 days in a row.

This week we were able to meet with a lot of our investigators and some less actives that asked for the missionary lessons again so that it will be easier for them to come back to church. So that was pretty awesome!

We also had the opportunity to have a mission wide conference call about the new video that the church has produced "Because He Lives", and how we can and should use it in our missionary work. One of the things we talked about was to commit everyone who reads our letters to go and watch it, so I invite you all to watch this awesome video and then write me an email about your thoughts. Ready. Set. Go. 

Yeah, so pretty much this week was an average week of missionary work and I'm so grateful that I could have it.

 

This next week is going to be amazing. We have Easter and General Conference! That's a Spirit packed week and I am so excited! 

Remember the reason for this Easter season. Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

I don't know how many of you have been in my church building or have seen my missionary plaque, but on it is one of my favorite scriptures; 3 nephi 5:13

This scripture is true!:) I may not be perfect or as studly as Mormon, but I'm trying my best and I'm sharing this message.

He is risen and through him we can be resurrected too and we can live with our families forever.

How cool of a message is that!? I testify that it is true and that I love being able to share it!

Getting lost in the German forest

So this week has been a good week! We were able to get a lot of work done and I`m finally kicking my cold!

This week we walked a lot! haha Who am I kidding, we walk everywhere! 

On Tuesday we walked to a small village called Olexdorf. Olexdorf is a farming village that gets a bus that comes through it every 4 hours and is probably 5 or 6 miles out of the city, so we just walk down the long country road and talk to people as we go. This week as we were in Olexdorf doing some doors and meeting with some people, but we decided we wanted to take a different route back to Itzehoe. This "road" led us deep into the forest so we were a little bit worried, but it eventually led us home. That was our adventure for this week!

 

 

We also met with Eoidi the son of Johanna, one of our Investigators, to teach him English. Johanna wanted us to teach him about the Book of Mormon. Johanna and Eoidi are from the Dominican Republic and they speak Spanish and a little bit of German. (I wish Grayson or Lanie or Gentry were here so they could help me with this language barrier) Meeting with Eoidi is one of my favorite things to do. This time we asked him if he had heard of Joseph Smith and he said "I'm pretty sure I do, let me think" then told the whole story of the restoration...........  We were shocked! We asked him where he had learned about this and he said...."South Park".........First off, what the heck? And second, Eoidi is 9 years old!!!!! But he is stoked to learn the real story and he loves reading in the Book of Mormon with us!

 

This week has been a great week, and next week will be even better!

Sickness, sweat lodges, and a brothel?

So this week we were sick, and being sick on your mission is the worst! It doesn't matter how big you smile or how excited and happy you are to share the gospel, people don't seem to like being sneezed on very much. Luckily, no one got sneezed on, but nobody wanted to talk to us either....

This is a very frustrating thing for a missionary because our purpose is literally to "invite others to come unto Christ" and in order to teach someone you must be able to talk to them. During lunch time we decided we were going to get rid our sickness as fast as we could.... which quickly escalated into us wearing all of our winter gear and doing a variety of exercises. As you can guess....... that did absolutely nothing except for make us more tired and sore...but we pushed on and went finding. 

The location for our finding was the biggest building in Itzehoe. A 16 story apartment building.....

so we spent the day climbing stairs and talking to people, and all in all we found no one new to teach... but we did accidentally find a brothel...(really people?.....gross) So that building isn't only the biggest building in Itzehoe but apparently the greatest and the most spacious......;) (oh, missionary humor!)

Other than that we did some really good work this week. Two of our lessons turned into us boldly defending the faith (bible bashing...... I hate it!) and we set a baptismal date with Johanna our investigator from the Dominican Republic! This week has just been fantastic and I'm super excited for what this next week will turn into!

 

Now for the spiritual thought!

This week Elder Garner and I had the opportunity to teach a lesson in district meeting on diligence, then afterward we sang Put Your Shoulder To The Wheel. This song is just great! It teaches us how we should being working. With a heart full of song! Now, unless that song in your heart is a sad one or you are just not a happy person, how can you be sad?! We get to live and love and work with our families and our friends!

I just love being a missionary and I love all of your support! I sure hope you all have a great week!

First bunkbeds and now spiders! oh, and Sister Brim!

Okay take a look at the first picture and tell me what is wrong.... that is a spider that is bigger than a GUMMY BEAR! last time I checked I'm in Germany..... not in some rain forest or in Africa?! I found that sucker underneath my chair as I was studying and elder Garner freaked out, so of course I caught it and now I'm keeping it in a jar...... but we have a mission rule that we can't keep pets so we will see what happens to it after emails....

Okay, so this week was AWESOME! We got to go into Kiel for zone training meeting and guess who was there? Sister Brim! First time being in the same zone as one of my best mission friends, so that was really exciting! In zone training meeting we had an awesome lesson on finding joy in all parts of the work.  

This week we really did some awesome work. We actually set a baptismal date and we found 4 new investigators! 

Elder Garner and I get along great and being a missionary is absolutely THE best thing ever!

Here is a scripture that has been on my mind lately!
"and he that is faithful shall be made strong in every place; and I, the Lord, will go with you." D&C 66:8
I love this scripture because it tells us that all we need to do is be faithful. It doesn't matter what our abilities are or weaknesses are as long as we are trying out best to do what is right, and then our Lord and Savior will help us. He will make up the difference, but we first must do our part.

So yeah, what a great week! I hope everything is going well with everyone!

Neumünster Zone Training Meeting

Bunk beds.... why did it have to be bunk beds? it's a hoe, and rain lots of rain!

First off, whoever emails me the movie I just quoted first wins a special prize! ........ probably just an email.     HINT: Replace the word bunk beds with snakes........

So I made it to Glückstadt safely after a 5 hour train ride in a compartment with a very large and very grumpy gentleman who was sleeping. I luckily managed to avoid waking him from his slumber but some people were not so fortunate!

I met Up with Elder Garner (my new companion) in Hamburg and I also ran into Elder Bretzing, my trainer, who is now apparently the new Hamburg Zone leader! What a stud!

Elder Garner is the son of a military man and has lived practically everywhere in the United States. He is an awesome missionary and I'm definitely going to be learning and running a lot this transfer. Our area is called Glückstadt because that is where the church is, but we technically live in the city of Itzehoe pronounced like  "it's a Hoe!"  and it is super pretty and I will definitely be taking a lot of pictures once it stops raining...... so that might be never.

The ward is awesome! My new district is awesome! Pretty much everything is perfect here other than the fact that we have a bunk bed! I despise bunk beds! The newer missionary in the area gets the top...... and the mission has turned me into a really old lazy man who thinks having to climb to sleep is a stupid idea! 

But other than that, its perfect!

Yeah, its really just been a great week and I'm really excited to get to work!
